Challenge by Choice: Empowering Teams, One Decision at a Time
At Cielo Vista Team Challenge (CVTC), one of the first things you’ll hear us say is:
“Everything we do here is Challenge by Choice.”
But what does that really mean?
It means no one is ever forced to climb, jump, or do anything that feels overwhelming and outside their comfort zone. On our ropes course in San Antonio, every participant has the right—and the responsibility—to choose their level of involvement.
That choice might mean stepping onto a high element, or it might mean staying grounded while coaching, encouraging, or belaying a teammate. Both roles are equally important. Noel Pompa likes to say: “Discover—or be discovered—in a role.”
Just like in the workplace, sometimes you’re the one taking the lead, and other times you’re supporting someone else. What matters is showing up for your team.

Why Challenge by Choice Matters
Too often, employees and students alike feel pushed into tasks without having a say. That pressure creates resistance, not resilience.
At CVTC, we flip the script. Challenge by Choice allows participants to:
- Use their voice to set boundaries and express needs
- Build trust that no one will shame or pressure them
- Create space for authentic growth rather than fear-driven compliance
- Step into vulnerability in a supportive environment
When people feel safe, they’re far more willing to try something new—whether that’s climbing one step higher on the ladder or speaking up with a new idea in a meeting.
The Pain of Discipline vs. The Pain of Regret
We often remind participants of this choice:
- The Pain of Discipline – pushing yourself to try something difficult, even briefly.
- The Pain of Regret – walking away wishing you had.
On the course, that might mean trying three steps up the ladder instead of staying on the ground. In life, it might mean raising your hand in a meeting or saying yes to a new challenge.
Challenge by Choice empowers people to decide—and discover—what growth looks like for them.

A Real Example from the Course
Just last week, one participant began breathing heavily, anxious that she would be forced to climb. Instead of pushing, we paused. After a conversation, she chose not to climb but stepped into the role of encourager and coach.
By the end of the activity, her voice was the loudest on the ground, guiding her teammates and celebrating their progress. She had found her role, and her team was stronger for it.
That’s Challenge by Choice.
What Teams Take Away
Whether it’s a corporate team, a group of educators, or student-athletes, Challenge by Choice helps participants:
- Respect one another’s boundaries
- Communicate clearly and supportively
- Build trust through vulnerability and follow-through
- Leave empowered to make better choices back at work or school
Closing Thought
At CVTC, success isn’t measured by who climbs the highest. It’s measured by whether people show up, make intentional choices, and support each other along the way.
That’s the power of Challenge by Choice.
